What are you passionate about? What are you good at? These are questions we often ask ourselves when trying to discern our purpose in life. But here's a truth I want to share with you today: your purpose is a gift from God.
It’s easy to get tripped up, thinking that our purpose is something we need to figure out, as though it’s a puzzle to solve or a secret to uncover. But the reality is, your purpose has already been determined. You don’t need to figure out your purpose—it's a gift you get to receive.
Your purpose is intertwined with what you are passionate about and what you are good at. You may have many passions and talents, but the key is to ask yourself: what makes you come alive?
I can relate to the challenge of finding purpose. I’m good at many things and have a natural curiosity to learn and discover. This made it difficult for me to pinpoint my purpose. As a teenager, I thought my purpose was to work with children because that was the opportunity presented to me. Later, I was encouraged to pursue social work, and I thought maybe that was my purpose. I searched, explored, and went down many paths because I was interested in and good at so many things.
But then one day, as I was just starting HeartStance, I was sharing my vision with a classmate. I told him about the many articles I had written and the books I planned to write. He looked at me with delight and said, “You come to life when you talk about this.”
That "come to life" feeling has never gone away whenever I talk about my latest writing project. My purpose was found when I looked at what brought me to life.
When you search for your purpose, you don’t need to look very far. It’s right there within you. To find your purpose, here are three steps you can take:
Ask
How can I use my purpose to make a difference?
What touches my heart?
What has the Holy Spirit shown me
Seek
Actively pray and look for ways to make a difference. Living your purpose is not always a clear path, but it’s one you can walk with God’s guidance.
Knock
To knock requires physical movement. You need to take action, step out in faith, and be persistent in helping others connect with Jesus.
Once you find your "why," you will be able to find your way, as John Maxwell once so wisely said.
Your purpose is a precious gift from God, meant just for you. Embrace it, cherish it, and let it guide you as you step into the fullness of who God created you to be.
